Our 7th visual artist to participate in our OMNI Social Gallery. Similar to VARUS BELL, this talented artist is from Starkville, MS and also grew up with Justin Gandy. Introducing REY.WITH.THE.CAMERA the sickest photographer from Mississippi.
PICTURE ME ROLLING
Where are you from originally? What led you to visual art? Were you formally educated; are you self taught; or a little of both?
I was born and raised in Starkville, MS. My creativity and interest in visual arts sparked in my adolescent years. I remember looking into the mirror as my father finished my haircut one day as I asked him how he did it. I remember him sketching out Simba from the Lion King as he explained that it all started from his interest in drawing. From that moment, art really started to stand out to me.
It wasn’t until my sophomore year in high school that I received any type of “formal training,” if high school art classes fit into that category. That’s when I met Andrew Lark (ADVA's father) and decided to take his photography class. His classes, to this day, remain the best training I’ve received as an artist. However, I did attend a trade school for film in Orlando, FL, only to drop out my senior year.
Describe your thought process when you’re creating? What soothes you more creating or music? How does the music you listen to translate into your artwork?
I like to create with an open mind. I try to think of things objectively and depict my observations without bias. Right now, I’m in the process of finding what soothes me. I admit that music has always been a creative influence; however I cannot relate it to peace. I find more comfort in stepping away from everything and enjoying nature.
What was the toughest situation you’ve ever experienced? What keeps you going through the low times?
Life is tough! And the battle with my ego has turned out one of the toughest battles in my life. I find it difficult to balance self-confidence with self-doubt. It’s an internal battle between what I believe is true, and the contradictions I see in the world. Creating positive mental images usually propels me out of the low points though.
If you had the chance to sit down with three artist (dead or alive) and play a game of poker. Who would you play with?
On a light note, I’d choose W.E.B. Dubois, Leonardo da Vinci, and a hypothetical 80-year-old me in a poker match against anyone!
